A former correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury (FCI Danbury) has been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing an inmate. CARLOS SANCHEZ, 33, formerly of Middlebury, was sentenced to 10 months of imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release, for his heinous crime.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Sanchez engaged in sexual activity with a female inmate at the prison on two occasions in July and August 2018. This blatant abuse of power and violation of the inmate’s rights is a disturbing reminder of the need for accountability within the correctional system.
Sanchez pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse of a ward on December 10, 2018. His guilty plea was a direct result of the investigation conducted by the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anastasia E. King, who ensured that justice was served.
The sentence handed down to Sanchez is a significant one, and it sends a strong message to those who would abuse their power and exploit vulnerable individuals. As a correctional officer, Sanchez was sworn to protect and serve the inmates in his care, not to prey upon them. His actions were a betrayal of the trust placed in him, and he must now face the consequences.
Sanchez is currently released on a $50,000 bond but is required to report to prison on May 21, 2019. This will mark the beginning of his 10-month prison sentence, which will be followed by five years of supervised release. It is hoped that this sentence will serve as a deterrent to others who would consider engaging in similar misconduct.
The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of the Department of Justice to holding individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their position or status. The fact that a correctional officer was brought to justice for his crimes is a testament to the integrity and dedication of the law enforcement agencies involved.
In a statement, John H. Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced the sentencing of Sanchez. The statement served as a reminder that the Department of Justice will continue to vigorously pursue cases of misconduct and abuse, particularly those that involve the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
