Placerville Man Charged with Dog Fighting
Carlos Villasenor, 38, of Placerville, California, has been charged with 27 counts of possessing dogs for use in an animal fighting venture.
According to court documents, on June 17, law enforcement agents executed a federal search warrant at Villasenor’s property and seized 27 pit bull-type dogs. One of the dogs had injuries to its face consistent with an attack from another dog, and many of the dogs had untreated veterinary conditions.
Investigations found numerous implements of the dog fighting trade on the property, including a breeding stand, treadmills, and veterinary supplies. These supplies included skin staplers, antibiotics, syringes, and IV bags. Paperwork found on the property indicated that Villasenor owned dogs used in dog fighting.
U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced the indictment, stating that the investigation and charges should send a strong zero-tolerance message to those who traffic in inflicting pain and suffering on animals.
Patricia Contreras, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Office of Inspector General, also commented on the case, expressing appreciation for the commitment of federal partners in pursuing those who operate animal fighting ventures.
Carlos Villasenor faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. He may also be ordered to pay restitution for the care and rehabilitation of the dogs.
The charges against Villasenor are only allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
