ALBUQUERQUE – A high-speed chase and a twisted wreck couldn’t save Christopher Saunders, 25, of Carlsbad, New Mexico. He’s headed to federal prison for 211 months after being convicted of running drugs and illegal firearms. And in the federal system, there’s no getting out early on good behavior – that’s a lifetime behind bars, essentially.
The trouble started June 5, 2022, when a Carlsbad Police officer spotted Saunders tearing through town in a pickup. When the officer tried to pull him over, Saunders floored it, blowing through stop signs and endangering anyone in his path. The officer wisely called off the pursuit, but luck – or rather, Saunders’ bad driving – intervened minutes later when the truck crashed. First responders provided aid to Saunders, but a subsequent search of the wreckage revealed the real story: drugs and a gun.
Officers didn’t stop with the initial search. A warrant turned up a hefty 57.02 grams of methamphetamine, enough to poison a lot of lives, along with two fully loaded firearms. The kicker? Saunders was already a convicted felon, having earned a felony conviction in 2019. That meant possessing those guns was already illegal, layering another serious charge on top of the drug trafficking.
Saunders ultimately pled guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. It was a smart move; the evidence was stacked against him. But it didn’t save him from the long sentence handed down by the court.
“This sentence should send a clear message,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison. It’s a message about the consequences of flooding our communities with poison and arming yourself illegally. Philip Russell, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, echoed that sentiment. This wasn’t a victimless crime, and the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offenses.
The investigation was a team effort, led by the Roswell Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, with crucial support from the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office and the Carlsbad Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark A. Saltman prosecuted the case, bringing Saunders to justice. Even after serving his 211-month sentence, Saunders will face another five years of supervised release – a reminder that he’s still accountable for his actions.
