Man Sentenced to 18 Years for Daylight Murder

Washington D.C. – In a shocking display of violence, a 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in the brutal murder of a 35-year-old man in broad daylight in Northwest Washington.

The victim, Kenneth Young, was stabbed to death in the 3400 block of 14th Street NW on October 3, 2014, at around 5:30 p.m. The attack, which was witnessed by several people, left Young with severe injuries, including a three-inch deep stab wound to the right center of the chest that pierced his heart.

A witness later reported hearing Hammond boasting about the attack, which led to his arrest on October 24, 2014. Hammond, who was found guilty of second-degree murder while armed and carrying a dangerous weapon in May 2016, was sentenced by Honorable Michael Ryan.

U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips commended the work of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) for their investigation into the case. Phillips also acknowledged the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michelle Bradford, Kimberley C. Nielsen, and Allessandra Stewart, who prosecuted the case, as well as Information Technology Specialist Leif Hickling, Investigative Analyst Zachary McMenamin, Paralegal Specialist Kendra Johnson, and Victim/Witness Advocate Marcia Rinker.

The case highlights the need for increased vigilance and community involvement in preventing such violent crimes. As this case shows, justice can be served even years after the fact, but it is up to the community to come together to prevent such tragedies from happening in the first place.

Hammond will serve his 18-year sentence and will be placed on five years of supervised release upon completion. His conviction serves as a reminder that violence will not be tolerated in our community, and those who commit such crimes will face the full force of the law.
