Postal Worker Fakes Cancer, Faces Up to 10 Years in Prison

Caroline Zarate Boyle, a 59-year-old resident of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, has been indicted for faking cancer in order to claim hundreds of hours of sick leave and work from home. Boyle, a U.S. Postal Service employee, allegedly forged several doctor’s notes to support her claim, which she then emailed to her supervisor.

According to the indictment, Boyle’s scheme was uncovered by special agents from the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General. Employees from the offices of the doctors involved told investigators that the notes were fake and Boyle had never received treatment there. Some of the notes contained inaccurate information, including misspellings of the doctor’s name.

Boyle appeared before a federal magistrate judge in U.S. District Court earlier this month in response to a summons on a complaint alleging that she faked having cancer. She was advised of her rights and the charges pending against her, and was then released on bond.

The U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General is being commended for their thorough investigation into this case. ‘The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General is excellent at rooting out fraud and conducting righteous investigations,’ said Acting U.S. Attorney Bob Troyer. ‘Thanks to them, Americans don’t have to tolerate this kind of cheating.’

Boyle is charged with presenting a forged writing to the United States with the intent to defraud, a crime that carries a penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison and up to a $250,000 fine. This case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Burrows.

The charges contained in the complaint and indictment are allegations, and Boyle is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This case serves as a reminder that employees of the U.S. Postal Service, like all Americans, are expected to be honest and forthright in their professional endeavors.
