Four North Texas teenagers lost their lives to a fentanyl overdose in the Carrollton juvenile scandal, and today justice was served. Luis Eduardo Navarrete, 22, became the first defendant charged in this tragic case, receiving a 20-year sentence for his role in the distribution of deadly fentanyl pills.
The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Leigha Simonton, announced the sentencing, emphasizing that despite Navarrete’s disregard for the lives lost, today’s verdict offered some solace to the families affected by this senseless tragedy.
Navarrete, who was charged and indicted in February 2023, pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a Schedule II controlled substance and distribution of a controlled substance to a person under 21 years of age. He was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Ed Kinkeade.
“Even as children overdosed and died around him, this defendant continued to distribute poisonous pills,” Simonton said. “The callousness is chilling. Although we can never bring these kids back, we hope today’s verdict is a balm to their families’ unbearable suffering.”
The DEA Dallas Special Agent in Charge Eduardo A. Chavez added, “Today’s sentencing shows that justice has been served and that DEA remains committed to fighting illicit fentanyl trafficking in North Texas.”
According to court documents, Navarrete and several co-conspirators trafficked fentanyl pills to a network of juvenile drug dealers, who sold them at R.L. Turner High School, Dewitt Perry Middle School, and Dan Long Middle School. The DEA task force officer testified that Navarrete began trafficking fentanyl in August 2022.
In a shocking display of disregard for human life, despite being informed of an overdose death, Navarrete continued to distribute the pills. On Jan. 26, 2023, a juvenile dealer notified him about the death of a 14-year-old middle school student from one of his pills. Despite this, Navarrete continued to distribute.
