Oniel Christopher Russell, Gun Possession and Assault, Florida 2024

Orlando, Florida – A Jamaican national, Oniel Christopher Russell, also known as OG Russell (39), faces a federal prison term of up to 18 years after being indicted for illegal firearm possession and felony assault on a federal officer.

Russell first entered the United States in October 2008 as a non-immigrant visitor. He overstayed his visa and has been living in the country without legal immigration status since. In August 2013, he was found with a Ruger firearm by Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

The trouble escalated when Russell threatened to murder an employee of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services over the phone after posting a “cop killer” video on YouTube. During his attempted arrest in October 2016, Russell physically resisted, pulling a deportation officer into a wall and dragging him towards his residence before he was apprehended.

This grim case has been jointly investigated by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Special Assistant United States Attorney Christina R. Downes will be handling the prosecution on assignment from ICE’s Office of the Principal Legal Advisor.

It’s important to note that an indictment is merely a formal charge, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
