WASHINGTON — The grim shadow of the United Cartels stretched across America today as the Justice Department unfurled a relentless campaign against its senior leadership. Juan Jose Farias Alvarez, AKA “El Abuelo,” Alfonso Fernandez Magallon, known as “Poncho,” Luis Enrique Barragan Chavez, referred to as “Wicho / R5,” Edgar Orozco Cabadas, alias “El Kamoni,” and Nicolas Sierra Santana, also recognized as “El Gordo,” all face life-altering charges.
“Today’s charges are a direct hit at the heart of the United Cartels,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi declared. “This is about dismantling an organization that has spread death and destruction across our nation.” The department’s all-out assault on foreign terror organizations underlines the administration’s resolve to hunt down and prosecute those who operate in the shadows.
“The Treasury Department stands united with law enforcement,” Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized. “We’re tracking every dollar earned by these cartels through their illegal schemes.” The sanctions imposed today are yet another salvo in this relentless battle, targeting the financial lifelines that keep the violence flowing.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti praised the collaborative effort behind the investigation. “From a small town in Middle America to clandestine labs in Michoacán, Mexico, this case is a testament to our unwavering pursuit of justice,” he said. The bravery of law enforcement partners, including those who faced danger head-on in a shootout, was also highlighted.
Senior Bureau Official Chris Landberg echoed the president’s promise to stop drug trafficking. “With today’s $26 million reward offer, we are one step closer to dismantling this terror network,” he said. The Department of State is committed to this fight, targeting Mexican narcotics traffickers associated with Cárteles Unidos.
“This investigation is a shining example of what happens when law enforcement partners across borders and jurisdictions,” U.S. Attorney Francis M. Hamilton III for the Eastern District of Tennessee said. “We started small but ended up taking down a transnational criminal organization.” The commitment to public safety on both sides of the border remains unwavering.
