Craig Grimes, a 36-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in prison for possessing a firearm.
Grimes was convicted of conspiracy to distribute marijuana in the Federal District Court of New Mexico on January 21, 2011. As part of his supervised release, the United States Probation office was authorized to search his residence without a warrant.
On March 15, 2012, officers from the Omaha Police Department and the United States Probation office searched Grimes’ residence. During the search, a Rossi .357 caliber revolver was found under his bed with his DNA on it.
According to federal law, it is a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm. Grimes’ previous conviction for conspiracy to distribute marijuana in 2011 made him a prohibited possessor of firearms.
Grimes will serve three years on supervised release following his prison term. The sentence is a result of a joint investigation by the United States Probation office and the Omaha Police Department.
United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg announced the sentencing, emphasizing the importance of upholding federal laws that prohibit convicted felons from possessing firearms.
Grimes’ case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws related to firearms and supervision.
