A Buffalo man was sentenced to 12 months in prison for fraudulently obtaining social security benefits. Carter Watts, Jr., of Buffalo, N.Y., was convicted of unlawfully receiving supplemental security income benefits.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Watts received a total of $15,456 in benefits from October 1, 2013, to June 1, 2015, on behalf of his disabled daughter. However, the child was not living with him at the time.
U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Arcara ordered Watts to pay $15,456 in restitution as part of his sentence.
The investigation into Watts’ actions was led by the Office of the Inspector General of the Social Security Administration, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Edward J. Ryan.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Lamarque handled the case.
The sentencing took place on an unspecified date.
