Casamero Lake Man Pleads Guilty to Assault
A shocking crime has shaken the community of Casamero Lake, New Mexico. Kirby Cleveland, 29, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has pleaded guilty to assaulting a person during a home invasion.
The horrific incident took place on May 14, 2012, at the family home of the victim, a Navajo woman. Cleveland, armed with a baseball bat, forced his way into the residence, leaving the victim with serious bodily injuries. This disturbing act was allegedly in retaliation for individuals who had threatened him earlier in the day.
Cleveland was arrested in July 2012 and has been in federal custody ever since. He remains detained pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled. Under the terms of his plea agreement, Cleveland will be sentenced to two-years in prison followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the court.
According to the criminal complaint, Cleveland’s actions were a brazen display of violence, leaving the victim shaken and traumatized. The case has sparked concerns about the safety of residents within the Navajo Nation.
The investigation into Cleveland’s crimes was led by the Crownpoint office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jacob Wishard and Novaline D. Wilson.
