Casey Douglas Saunders, Felon in Possession of Firearms, West Virginia 2022

A Parkersburg man with a history of breaking the law has been handed a nine-year prison sentence for possessing firearms.

Casey Douglas Saunders, 30, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of firearms after a search of his Camden Avenue residence on May 14, 2020, uncovered three semi-automatic pistols and one semi-automatic rifle.

The discovery was made by law enforcement officers who had entered the residence to arrest Saunders on an outstanding warrant for violating his parole. Saunders had absconded from parole after being convicted of burglary, delivery of a controlled substance, and escape in Wood County Circuit Court.

According to court documents, Saunders’ escape conviction was a particularly egregious offense. He had stolen a police officer’s vehicle and fled from arrest after the officer attempted to apprehend him on an outstanding warrant.

As a result of his previous convictions, Saunders is prohibited from possessing firearms. Despite this, he was found to be in possession of multiple guns, sparking a federal investigation and ultimately his sentencing.

United States District Judge Irene C. Berger imposed the sentence, while Assistant United States Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe handled the prosecution. The Parkersburg Violent Crimes and Narcotics Task Force, the United States Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Parkersburg Police Department all contributed to the investigation.

Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston commended the work of the task force and law enforcement agencies involved in the case. Saunders will now serve his 108-month sentence in federal prison.
