Cassius Farmer, 28, Indicted on Felon in Possession of a Firearm Charge in South Dakota
A 28-year-old Mission man has been hit with a serious crime after allegedly violating federal firearms laws. Cassius Farmer, age 28, was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 9, 2021, on a charge of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
The indictment alleges that on October 21, 2021, Farmer knowingly possessed a firearm, despite being a convicted felon. This serious crime carries severe penalties, including up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Cassius Farmer appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 16, 2021, and pled not guilty to the Indictment. He was then remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson is prosecuting the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the centerpiece of the government’s violent crime reduction efforts.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is an evidence-based program that has been proven effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. The program focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
The charge against Cassius Farmer is merely an accusation, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. As the case moves forward, our newspaper will provide updates on the trial and any developments in the case.
