Cassius Farmer, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, South Dakota 2022

Cassius Farmer, a 28-year-old Mission, South Dakota man, was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a prohibited person.

On October 21, 2021, Farmer was found at an apartment building in Mission, South Dakota, after law enforcement personnel were searching for him due to an outstanding arrest warrant for violating federal supervised release.

During the search, Farmer initially gave a false name but later identified himself and informed the officers that he was carrying a handgun. The firearm was seized, and Farmer was detained.

Farmer was previously convicted of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in 2018, making it illegal for him to possess firearms and ammunition.

On March 21, 2022, Farmer was sentenced by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, to 15 months in federal prison, 3 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

Farmer will also forfeit ownership of the handgun and ammunition to the United States. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an evidence-based program aimed at reducing violent crime.

The investigation was conducted by the Dakota Territory Fugitive Task Force, the United States Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuted the case.

Farmer was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. This case is a prime example of the PSN program’s efforts to focus enforcement on the most violent offenders and partner with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
