GRIMY TIMES – In a grim turn of events, Theodore Roosevelt Owens, 22, from Hartford, has pleaded guilty to his involvement in a catalytic converter theft ring and unlawful possession of a stolen firearm.
Owens was arrested by Vernon Police on October 21, 2021, in a hotel parking lot where they discovered the loaded Zigana PX-9G2 pistol, which he believed to be stolen. The pistol was part of a shipment of 50 stolen pistols from an R&L Carriers warehouse in South Windsor.
The investigation revealed that Owens had conspired with others to steal and sell catalytic converters. He sold over $26,000 worth of stolen converters to a co-conspirator, who then transported them across state lines for resale.
Today, before U.S. District Judge Omar A. Williams, Owens pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years, and one count of conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, with a maximum sentence of five years. His sentencing date has yet to be set.
Owens remains in detention since his arrest. The ATF is leading both investigations into the firearm theft and catalytic converter ring, alongside other law enforcement agencies.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren C. Clark and A. Reed Durham.
