Donald Etheredge, 51, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is back behind bars and facing federal child pornography charges after an indictment unsealed today in U.S. District Court. The grim case details a pattern of predatory behavior stretching back more than a decade, with prosecutors alleging Etheredge received and stored horrific material on digital devices between 2013 and 2015.
According to the indictment, Etheredge possessed child pornography on both a computer and a flash drive—tools turned into instruments of exploitation. The allegations don’t stop there. Federal records reveal a prior conviction in 2004, when Etheredge was sentenced in the Northern District of Iowa for shipment and transportation of child pornography. His return to the same criminal terrain marks a disturbing recidivism that federal law enforcement is moving aggressively to punish.
If convicted, Etheredge faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in federal prison and a possible maximum of 80 years. He could also be fined $750,000, slapped with $15,300 in special assessments, and forced to live under federal supervision for at least five years—or the rest of his life—after any prison term.
Etheredge appeared in federal court today in Cedar Rapids and was ordered held without bond, a decision reflecting the severity of the charges and the perceived threat he poses. His trial is scheduled for March 27, 2017, setting the stage for a high-stakes prosecution built on digital evidence and federal investigative muscle.
The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Tremmel and investigated jointly by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department. It falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to target individuals who exploit children sexually, particularly online. The program combines federal, state, and local resources to hunt down offenders and rescue victims.
