Cedrick Exzavius Reese, Felon in Possession of Firearm, South Carolina 2023

Cedrick Exzavius Reese, 45, a West Columbia resident, has been handed a three-year federal prison sentence for illegal possession of crack cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl, in addition to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A Richland County deputy observed a speeding vehicle running a stop sign, prompting a traffic stop. The deputy found a clear plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine in Reese’s waistband, which he claimed was for personal use. A search of the vehicle uncovered a gun, ammunition, crack cocaine, and fentanyl.

Reese’s prior convictions for multiple drug offenses disqualify him from owning a firearm, a fact his sentencing acknowledges.

U.S. District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis handed down the 36-month prison sentence, to be followed by a concurrent three-year term of court-ordered supervision. Reese is also required to pay a $5,000 fine.

This case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy within communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney William K. Witherspoon is prosecuting the case.

This sentence serves as a clear warning to those who would engage in such illicit activities: the consequences are severe and the law will be enforced.
