A shocking case of government property theft has come to an end in South Dakota. Tobin Nettifee, a 37-year-old Hermosa man, was sentenced to 3 years of probation for Theft of Government Property on January 8, 2016, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court.
Nettifee’s conviction stems from a lengthy period of theft that took place between June 1, 2010, and August 28, 2014, while he was still employed by the National Park Service. During this time, he stole a vast array of equipment, including chainsaws, firefighting gear, radios, flight gear, microphones, a power generator, and power tools.
However, that was not the only instance of theft committed by Nettifee. On June 16, 2014, after he left his employment with the National Park Service, he stole a Stihl chainsaw from a U.S. Forest Service pickup at the Custer station and pawned it in Rapid City.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations. The U.S. Attorney for South Dakota, Randolph J. Seiler, announced the sentencing.
Nettifee was ordered to pay $800 in restitution and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. His sentence serves as a reminder that government property theft will not be taken lightly.
The case highlights the importance of accountability among government employees and the need for thorough investigations into allegations of theft.
In a statement, Randolph J. Seiler expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the case, saying, ‘The sentence imposed by the court reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need for accountability among government employees.’
The case is a stark reminder that government property theft will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
