Tommie Lee Nelson, 65, Lands Himself in Hot Water
A Miramar, Florida man has been caught red-handed in a brazen scheme to swindle a Lynchburg doctor out of nearly half a million dollars. Tommie Lee Nelson, 65, has pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud.
According to court documents, Nelson posed as a ‘hard money’ lender to the unsuspecting doctor, convincing him to wire several payments for the purchase of a commercial building in Danville, Virginia. However, these payments did not go toward the building purchase as promised.
Instead, Nelson used the victim’s money to fund his own lavish lifestyle, including trips to the casino. The purchase agreement eventually fell through, and Nelson stopped responding to the doctor’s calls.
Nelson now faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison at his upcoming sentencing. The FBI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew Inman is prosecuting the case for the United States.
Acting United States Attorney Robert N. Tracci and Ian Kaufmann, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Richmond Division made the announcement today.
This case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of financial deceit. The victim, a Lynchburg doctor, trusted Nelson with his life savings, only to be left with nothing. It’s imperative that we hold individuals accountable for their actions and bring them to justice.
