David Bruce Darby, Oxycodone Smuggling, Pennsylvania 2024

A deadly drug pipeline from New York City to Chambersburg has been severed after a 12-person trafficking ring was dismantled in a sweeping sting led by Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro. At the center of the operation: 41-year-old David Bruce Darby, accused of smuggling and distributing thousands of Oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl into Franklin and Cumberland counties. One delivery ended in the fatal overdose of 28-year-old Kayla Bertone in August 2019, who had more than double the therapeutic level of fentanyl in her system.

Authorities say Darby ran a tight, organized network that moved 6,000 pills and cocaine across state lines, fueling addiction and violence in south central Pennsylvania. The bust, a joint effort by the Office of Attorney General, Pennsylvania State Police, U.S. Marshals Service, and Franklin County Drug Task Force, marks a major blow to the opioid epidemic ravaging rural communities. “This defendant and his drug trafficking ring are responsible for the death of a young woman,” Shapiro said, calling the operation a cancer in the region.

Charged alongside Darby is his girlfriend, 34-year-old Sarah Catherine Turesky, who faces counts of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity, corrupt organizations, and criminal use of a communication facility. Also indicted are Delisha Keyon Redden, 39, who allegedly supplied pills to Darby and now faces drug delivery resulting in death; Cedric Stephens, 48; Natasha Gomez, 38; and Jonathan Butler, 41—all charged with controlled substance violations and participation in a corrupt organization.

Additional defendants include Karen Marie Sloane, 49; Alycia Logsdon, 30; Stacey Spoonhour, 39; David Hemphill, 57; Michael Campoli, 54; and Malik Bonds, 39. All face charges ranging from criminal conspiracy and corrupt organizations to unlawful use of communication tools to facilitate drug deals. Campoli is not charged with direct drug violations but is tied to the conspiracy and communication charges.

Investigators traced the operation through wiretaps, surveillance, and financial records showing a steady flow of narcotics from New York suppliers to Pennsylvania street-level distributors. The case underscores how small-town trafficking networks are often deeply connected to larger urban drug sources, creating a lethal cycle of supply and addiction. With fentanyl now routinely mixed into counterfeit pills, each transaction carries a death sentence.

The 12 suspects are awaiting arraignment in Franklin County. Darby faces the harshest penalties, including life implications from the drug delivery resulting in death charge. AG Shapiro vowed to pursue every link in the chain: “We’re not just making arrests—we’re tearing down pipelines that kill.” The investigation remains active as authorities probe additional connections in New York.
