Hells Angel Sentenced for Railcar Heist
A former member of the notorious Hells Angels Motorcycle Club has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for stealing a shipment of high-grade scrap steel from a railcar in Batavia, N.Y.
Richard E. Riedman, 40, of Webster, N.Y., was convicted of conspiracy to burglarize a railroad car and theft of an interstate shipment after a jury trial in 2012. Riedman and his co-conspirators stole more than 17 gross tons of scrap steel from a CSXT rail yard in the early morning hours of June 30, 2009.
The defendants used a logging truck to remove the scrap steel, wore dark clothing, and used lookouts to avoid detection by law enforcement authorities and pedestrians. They also used two-way radios to communicate with each other during the theft.
The bales were in the process of being shipped to a steel mill in Pennsylvania when they were stolen. Riedman and his co-conspirators were caught by members of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office as they left the scene of the theft in the early morning hours of June 30, 2009.
U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa also ordered Riedman to pay $4,669.26 in restitution as part of his sentence. The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
Riedman’s co-conspirators have also been sentenced. Christopher Monfort was sentenced to 78 months in prison, while Anthony Toscano received 18 months and Anthony Russell and Timothy Stone were sentenced to 15 and 12 months, respectively.
