Darryl S. Coleman, Bank Robbery, Illinois 2015

URBANA, Ill. — Darryl S. Coleman, 30, of Champaign, has been slammed with a 137-month federal prison sentence for a string of bank robberies that terrorized east central Illinois and northwestern Indiana in 2015.

The city’s streets have seen their last of the so-called ‘Champaign Bandit,’ who was formally ordered to serve time by U.S. District Judge Colin S. Bruce for his heists on First Financial Bank, Champaign; First Bank in Rantoul; First Midwest Bank, Danville; and an attempted grab at Farmers-Merchants National Bank in Paxton.

Coleman’s spree also included attacks on Horizon Bank in Portage and the First State Bank of Porter in Chesterton. The judge handed down a consecutive 22-month sentence for these Indiana crimes, which means Coleman will spend at least 11 years, five months behind bars.

On June 16, 2016, Coleman was sentenced to 63 months for his actions in the Hoosier State, while also owing over $20,000 in restitution. His guilty plea came nearly a year after his arrest on Jan. 25, 2016, and he’s been in U.S. Marshals custody since.

U.S. Attorney Eugene L. Miller led the prosecution, with the FBI and local police forces from Champaign, Danville, Rantoul, and Paxton doing their due diligence to bring Coleman to justice.

The gritty criminal will have plenty of time to reflect on his actions as he serves out his sentence. The people of east central Illinois and northwestern Indiana can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that the ‘Champaign Bandit’ is no more.
