A Schenectady man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a child pornography ring. Chandler Whittaker, 25, was found guilty of receipt and possession of child pornography.
According to court documents, Whittaker downloaded several images of child pornography from the internet between July and October 2014, and in January 2016. He also possessed hundreds of images and videos of child pornography on multiple electronic devices between December 2018 and February 2019.
Chief United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby also sentenced Whittaker to 20 years of supervised release and to pay restitution to the victims of his crimes. Whittaker will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
This case was investigated by the Rotterdam Police Department, the New York State Police, and the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Williams as part of Project Safe Childhood.
Project Safe Childhood is a federal initiative launched in May 2006, to combat child exploitation and abuse. The program is led by United States Attorney’s offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), and is designed to marshal federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
Whittaker’s sentencing is a significant victory for law enforcement and the community, and serves as a reminder of the severity of the consequences for those who engage in child exploitation.
