Johnstown is reeling after a brazen heroin distribution operation was brought to its knees by federal authorities. Charles A. Meyer, 38, was sentenced to 96 months in prison and six years’ supervised release on his conviction of violating federal narcotics laws, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced today.
A United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson imposed the sentence on Meyer, who was found guilty of distributing a quantity of heroin on three separate occasions: October 20, 2015, December 22, 2015, and January 22, 2016. Each of these incidents occurred within 1,000 feet of a playground, further exacerbating the danger posed by Meyer’s actions.
According to Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines, who prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, Meyer was also found to have possessed with the intent to distribute a quantity of heroin on January 22, 2016.
The investigation that led to Meyer’s conviction was a collaborative effort between the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cambria County Drug Task Force. United States Attorney Scott W. Brady commended these agencies for their tireless work in bringing Meyer to justice.
The severity of Meyer’s sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes. By distributing heroin near a playground, Meyer put the lives of countless children and families at risk. His sentence serves as a stark reminder that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable.
