Charles City’s Randy Patrie, a man with a rap sheet as long as his arms, has admitted to stealing 20 firearms and two sawed-off shotguns from a rural Iowa firearms dealer. The 40-year-old pleaded guilty in federal court in Cedar Rapids for being a felon in possession of 22 firearms.
Patrie’s crime spree began on May 2, 2013, when he burglarized a federally licensed firearm dealer in Floyd, Iowa. A year later, police found him with all the stolen goods at his Charles City home, including the two sawed-off shotguns. This isn’t Patrie’s first brush with the law; he has previously been convicted of attempted burglary, possession of firearms, methamphetamine delivery, and burglary.
Today, Patrie faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment, with life in prison without parole as a possibility. Sentencing before Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set once a presentence report is completed. The defendant remains behind bars awaiting his fate.
The case against Patrie was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney C.J. Williams and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Charles City Police Department, and Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.
