Two Men Indicted for Robbery and Assault on Pine Ridge Reservation
In a shocking turn of events, two men from the Pine Ridge reservation have been indicted by a federal grand jury for their alleged involvement in a robbery and assault. According to authorities, Charles Colhoff, a 27-year-old from Pine Ridge, and Jeremy Crow, a 22-year-old from Batesland, used a firearm to rob two females at Pine Ridge on June 4, 2015.
A week later, on June 11, 2015, they allegedly used a firearm to assault and threaten another female at Pine Ridge. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to life in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 5 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case.
Colhoff and Crow were remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has been set for June 21, 2016. The charges relate to the alleged use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.
The charges against Colhoff and Crow are merely accusations, and they are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
In a related development, Colhoff and Crow appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on April 15, 2016, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment. Crow had previously appeared before the same judge on March 30, 2016, and also pleaded not guilty.
The case has sparked widespread concern among residents of the Pine Ridge reservation, who are calling for stricter laws to protect citizens from violent crime. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges facing law enforcement in rural areas, where resources are often limited and crime rates are high.
