Local Man Sentenced to Prison for Federal Gun Crime

A 37-year-old man from Cairo was sentenced to seven years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Charles Dana Johnson II, 37, of Cairo, was handed the sentence by United States District Judge Irene C. Berger on October 2, 2025.

Johnson admitted to possessing a loaded SCCY model DVG-1 9mm pistol and a loaded Walther model P22 .22-caliber pistol during a traffic stop in Parkersburg on November 17, 2024. The officer conducting the stop found the firearms in Johnson’s waistband.

Federal law prohibits individuals with prior felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition. Johnson was aware of this restriction due to his prior convictions for possession with intent to deliver heroin on October 2, 2016, and first-degree robbery on January 12, 2012, both in Wood County Circuit Court.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney Moore Capito, who commended the investigative work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Lesley C. Shamblin prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating violent crime and protecting communities. The operation seeks to repel the invasion of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, eliminate them, and keep communities safe from violent crime.
