SUNDANCE, WY – Charles Victor Flint, 63, is headed to federal prison after admitting to a horrific crime. U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson sentenced Flint to 120 months behind bars on October 2, 2023, for possession of child pornography. The case stemmed from a March 1, 2023, search warrant executed by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, triggered by CyberTips flagged by the Wyoming Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
This wasn’t Flint’s first brush with the law. Court records reveal prior state convictions in Colorado for internet luring of a child and attempted sexual assault of a child. Investigators discovered a trove of disturbing images – child pornography and child erotica – stored on devices belonging to Flint. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christyne M. Martens successfully prosecuted the case, securing a significant sentence for the predator.
In Buffalo, Wyoming, Joshua Ray Germer, 39, will spend 28 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Judge Johnson handed down the sentence on October 3, 2023. Germer, already on probation, was found with a Walther pistol, various ammunition calibers, and suspected suppressors during a routine home visit by probation officers. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan C. Coppom leading the prosecution.
The drug trade continues to poison Wyoming communities. Tyler Christian Sims, 31, of Casper, received a 94-month sentence on October 11 from Chief U.S. District Court Judge Scott W. Skavdahl for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. An investigation by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) revealed that drugs were being delivered to Sims’ residence via the U.S. Postal Service. A controlled delivery led to the seizure of approximately 200 grams of meth. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service assisted in the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Elmore secured the conviction.
The fentanyl crisis claimed another victim, and Ashley Hyatt, 35, of Cheyenne, is now paying the price. Judge Johnson sentenced Hyatt to 65 months in prison on October 6 for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and distribution of fentanyl. The investigation began with the tragic discovery of a deceased woman in her bedroom on September 25, 2022, alongside a burnt blue pill and several others. Text messages on the woman’s phone showed she had purchased the fentanyl pills from Hyatt the day before. A subsequent investigation revealed Hyatt’s involvement in distributing fentanyl and methamphetamine, with seizures totaling approximately 280 grams of methamphetamine and 472 fentanyl pills. Another 60 grams of fentanyl were found at the time of her arrest on May 18, 2023. The Drug Enforcement Administration investigated, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Forwood handled the prosecution.
These cases highlight the relentless work of federal agencies battling crime in Wyoming. From the darkest corners of online exploitation to the deadly streets fueled by drug trafficking, the U.S. Attorney’s Office is working to hold offenders accountable. But the fight is far from over, and Grimy Times will continue to report on these critical cases as they unfold.
