Felony Firearms Charge Lands Fort Wayne Man 180 Months in Prison
A 27-year-old Fort Wayne man has been sentenced to 180 months in prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm in Indiana.
Charles McCreary was sentenced by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Theresa Springmann after admitting to having a .40 caliber firearm in his possession in January 2017.
According to court documents, McCreary’s possession of the firearm was a violation of his status as an armed career criminal, given his three prior felony convictions in Allen County Court.
The case was investigated by the ATF, with assistance from the Fort Wayne Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Stacey R. Speith prosecuted the case.
McCreary’s sentence includes 2 years of supervised release following his time in prison.
Residents of Fort Wayne and surrounding areas are calling for stricter gun laws in response to the sentencing, citing the need to prevent similar crimes in the future.
U.S. Attorney Kirsch stated that the prosecution of McCreary’s case demonstrates the commitment of federal authorities to combating gun violence and holding felons accountable for their actions.
