CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a grim turn of events, 22-year-old Joshua Michael Jenkins from Charlotte faced the music as he was sentenced to 88 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for possession of a machinegun and the illegal use of a firearm.
The court record paints a chilling picture of October 30, 2022, when a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop Jenkins for speeding. His refusal to comply led to a high-speed chase that reached speeds topping 130 miles per hour. In a dramatic turn, Jenkins exited the highway, ran a red light, and collided with four vehicles at an intersection before attempting to flee on foot.
The state trooper gave chase and caught sight of Jenkins holding a firearm pointed in his direction. After a tense confrontation, Jenkins was apprehended.
Law enforcement’s search of a trashcan in the vicinity revealed a Glock model 23, .40 caliber pistol equipped with a machinegun conversion device, known as a “Glock Switch.” The evidence pile grew heavier with the discovery of Jenkins’ social media posts and a video showcasing his apparent use of an automatic weapon.
U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, Russ Ferguson, expressed gratitude to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, and the Huntersville Police Department for their diligent work on the case.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney William Wiseman, a state prosecutor with the office of the 26th Prosecutorial District, prosecuted Jenkins. Wiseman’s dual swearing-in in state and federal courts highlights the collaborative efforts between the District Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
