CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A hard-hitting blow in the war against gun crime came as Russell Cary Owens, 51, of Thomasville, North Carolina, was sentenced to one year behind bars for his unlawful possession of firearms. The sentence was announced by Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen.
Owens’ criminal history includes a prior felony conviction in Texas, which made his possession of over ten firearms in Monongalia County, West Virginia, all the more sinister. He had been caught with these weapons in June 2016 and subsequently pleaded guilty to one count of “Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm” in November 2016.
The government’s case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Traci M. Cook, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) conducted the investigation that led to Owens’ downfall.
Presiding over the sentencing was U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley, ensuring justice was served according to federal law.
