New York – In a bold move against the Trump administration’s clampdown on clean energy, Attorney General Letitia James has led a coalition of 17 state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit. The lawsuit targets the arbitrary halt on new wind energy developments nationwide, initiated by President Trump in January 2025.
The directive, which suspended federal approvals for wind projects, has left numerous applications frozen, according to Attorney General James. This legal challenge argues that such a blockade is not just illegal but also threatens thousands of jobs and billions in investments.
‘This administration’s move is a direct attack on one of our fastest-growing sources of clean energy,’ said AG James. ‘It’s an arbitrary directive that endangers good-paying jobs, billions in investments, and our commitment to transitioning from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources.’
The lawsuit highlights the contradiction between President Trump’s directive and his own Executive Orders calling for expanded domestic energy production. It also underscores the impact on states’ ability to provide affordable electricity and meet their climate goals. New York, for instance, is aiming to obtain 70 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 100 percent by 2040.
AG James and the coalition warn that this halt could delay replacing fossil fuels with clean energy, exacerbating climate change, public health issues, and environmental degradation. The lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction to lift the freeze while litigation proceeds.
This legal battle over wind energy not only underscores the political divisions on climate policy but also places the future of renewable energy projects in limbo, as states fight to maintain their commitment to clean energy and economic growth.
