Hammond, Indiana — In a shocking turn of events, Chavonne Jackson, 28, of Chicago, Illinois, formerly of Hammond, Indiana, has pleaded guilty to the felony offense of conspiracy to commit identity theft and bank fraud before U.S. District Court Judge Joseph S. Van Bokkelen.
According to court documents, Jackson’s sentencing is scheduled for February 20, 2015. The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Toi Denise Houston.
If convicted in court, any specific sentence to be imposed will be determined by the judge after a consideration of federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

The case involved the fraudulent redemption of SNAP benefits at multiple Gary, Indiana convenience stores. Defendant Muhamad and his co-conspirators purchased SNAP benefits for cash and allowed SNAP beneficiaries to use their benefits to purchase prohibited items like cigarettes and cell phones.
This case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Diane Berkowitz.
