BOSTON – In a brazen act of thievery, a Chelsea man has been charged with robbing a TD Bank branch, netting a whopping $3,760.
Edward Robert Rezendes, a 66-year-old Chelsea resident, was taken into custody yesterday and charged with one count of bank robbery in U.S. District Court in Boston.
Rezendes, already on supervised release for an unrelated bank robbery, appeared before Magistrate Judge Donald L. Cabell and was ordered detained.
According to court documents, the alleged heist occurred on September 10, 2019, when Rezendes allegedly robbed a TD Bank branch in Chelsea, making off with the aforementioned sum.
The charging statute carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000. Sentences will be imposed by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
A team of investigators led by U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling, FBI Special Agent Joseph R. Bonavolonta, and Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes made the announcement.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kenneth G. Shine and Adam W. Deitch will be prosecuting the case. Rezendes maintains his innocence until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The investigation into the bank robbery remains ongoing. In the meantime, the community is left to wonder how such a heinous crime could occur under their noses.
As the case unfolds, the Grimy Times will provide updates on Rezendes’ status and the progress of the investigation.
