CHICAGO — A former state legislator has hit rock bottom after being sentenced to federal prison for a shocking display of financial chicanery. AnnaZette Collins, 62, was today locked up for one year in federal prison for an array of tax-related offenses, including underreporting and failing to file her income taxes.
Collins, once a Representative and Senator in the Illinois General Assembly, is now facing the music as a result of her unethical activities. She was found guilty by a jury earlier this year on federal tax charges, which she willfully committed over two years.
The conviction centered around Collins’ deliberate actions to file false individual tax returns for 2014 and 2015, while also neglecting to file an income tax return for 2016. What’s more, the corrupt consultant also skipped out on filing corporate income taxes for her consulting and lobbying business, Kourtnie Nicole Corp., in 2016.
U.S. District Judge Jorge L. Alonso delivered a stern sentence, ordering Collins to pay $110,852 in restitution as part of her penalty. The government’s representatives, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michelle J. Parthum and Amarjeet S. Bhachu, had no choice but to uphold the law against this fallen public servant.
Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Jason Bushey, Acting Special Agent-in-Charge of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division in Chicago, and Robert W. “Wes” Wheeler, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI, all had a hand in bringing Collins to justice.
This sentence serves as a stark reminder that even those who hold positions of power are not immune to the law’s reach when it comes to financial corruption. Collins’ downfall is a testament to the unwavering efforts of federal investigators and prosecutors to ensure accountability for white-collar crime.
