CONCORD – In a grim turn of events, Timothy Ryan, 35, from Sanbornton, has pleaded guilty in federal court for possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), marking another victory in the relentless battle against online predators. The revelation comes as the Department of Justice (DOJ) continues its pursuit to protect our youth.
Ryan, identified as a significant offender in New Hampshire, was initially charged with one count of CSAM possession on December 12, 2022. Today’s guilty plea adds an additional count, bringing the total to two. Sentencing is scheduled for October 8, 2024, where Ryan faces up to 20 years imprisonment, mandatory supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
The investigation led authorities to trace Ryan’s online activities through the BitTorrent network, uncovering approximately 2,600 files of CSAM. A federal search warrant executed on his residence in December 2022 revealed the staggering volume of child exploitation material.
Further intrigue unfolded when Department of Veteran’s Affairs investigators discovered that an IP address associated with one of its Massachusetts facilities was being used to distribute known CSAM. Ryan, who had moved into this facility around the same time as the illicit activity began, faced a second search warrant in December 2023, yielding hundreds more images of child sexual abuse material.
Leading the investigation were Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, with valuable support from various law enforcement agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kasey Weiland is prosecuting the case, which is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
