Xanthus Nakia Murdaugh, Attempted Coercion and Enticement of a Minor, South Carolina 2019

Columbia, SC – A chilling sentence was meted out today as Xanthus Nakia Murdaugh, 46, of Rock Hill, was locked away for over eleven and a half years following his guilty plea in an attempted sexual exploitation case.

Murdaugh’s past as a repeat offender was laid bare in court, with revelations of a federal child pornography conviction and a previous state conviction for Solicitation of a Crime Against Nature. The defendant also confessed to the abuse of numerous minors, including children within the foster system, all without facing justice before.

The judge’s ruling came after evidence detailed Murdaugh’s sinister plan to communicate with an undercover law enforcement officer posing as a mother in need of help for her 13-year-old daughter. The predator was arrested on November 6, 2019, following his attempted coercion and enticement of the minor.

United States District Judge J. Michelle Childs sentenced Murdaugh to 140 months in federal prison, with a subsequent 10-year term of court-ordered supervision. Parole is non-existent within the federal system.

The investigation was a collaborative effort by the Department of Homeland Security (HSI), York County Sherriff’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), United States Secret Service, South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Assistant United States Attorney Elliott B. Daniels led the prosecution.

This case is a part of Project Safe Childhood, a national effort to combat online child exploitation. For more information on this initiative, visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
