Bellevue, NE – In a chilling display of violence against law enforcement, Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, 30, has been charged with attempted murder of a federal officer following a harrowing confrontation in Sarpy County. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Nebraska, Hurtado-Cariaco, a citizen of Venezuela and an illegal resident in Bellevue, was apprehended during a high-speed chase by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and FBI agents.
The incident began with agents having an active immigration-related warrant for Hurtado-Cariaco’s arrest. Upon encountering him while he was driving near his residence, they initiated a traffic stop. The suspect exited his vehicle with arms raised, but the situation quickly turned volatile when Hurtado-Cariaco clashed with one agent during attempts to cuff him.
During the struggle, Hurtado-Cariaco managed to throw the first agent onto the ground, causing them serious injuries. He then eluded capture before being pursued on foot by the agents and ultimately arrested at his apartment without further incident. The injured agent was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“Deadly violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi, emphasizing the Department of Justice’s stance on the matter. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche added, “The arrest and prosecution of this Tren de Aragua gang member is a testament to our commitment to protect our law enforcement officers.”
United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods praised the agents for their bravery under fire, stating that despite sustaining injuries, they did not give up on capturing Hurtado-Cariaco. The defendant appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ryan C. Carson, who ordered his detention and set a preliminary and detention hearing.
Hurtado-Cariaco faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to five years of supervised release if convicted. The case is currently under investigation by HSI.
