HARRISBURG – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania has delivered a stern verdict against Steven Gray, age 45, from York. Gray was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm following a three-day jury trial before Judge John E. Jones, III.
On January 1, 2017, officers with the York Police Department apprehended Gray with a loaded 9MM Taurus handgun containing seven rounds of ammunition. As a known felon, Gray was legally barred from owning or carrying firearms.
The investigation into this case was spearheaded by the York Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Scott R. Ford and Kim Douglas Daniel led the prosecution.
Gray’s conviction stems from Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that has been instrumental in bringing together law enforcement to combat violent crime and safeguard neighborhoods. Attorney General Jeff Sessions prioritizes combating America’s rising violent crime rates, which included reinvigorating PSN in October 2017 to address crime trends effectively.
The Judge will impose a sentence after reviewing federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, considering factors such as the nature of the offense, defendant characteristics, and public protection. The maximum penalty for firearm possession by a felon is life imprisonment, followed by supervised release and a fine.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who flout the law, especially when it comes to dangerous weapons on our streets.
