A Columbia, MO man has been sentenced to 127 months in federal prison without parole for possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute and a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.
James Edward Hughes, 30, was sentenced in federal court on multiple charges after a traffic stop by the Columbia Police Department on September 21, 2023. Officers pulled over a silver Mazda SUV with no front license plates and discovered a bag of pills containing 815 fentanyl pills on Hughes’ person.
During the pat-down search, police also found a Glock 36, .45 caliber handgun hidden under the driver’s seat. Hughes pleaded guilty to one count of possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute and one count of knowingly possessing a firearm in furtherance of that offense on February 25, 2025.
Hughes was sentenced to 67 months for the fentanyl charges and five years for the firearms offense. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively, resulting in a total of 127 months in prison. He will also serve four years of supervised release after his incarceration.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Lynn, with the investigation led by the Columbia Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
