Hunterdon County Man Sentenced for Distributing Child Pornography

A 74-year-old man from High Bridge, New Jersey, has been sentenced to 121 months in prison for distributing images of child sexual abuse over the internet, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

Darrel Underhill pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography before U.S. District Judge Kevin McNulty, who imposed the sentence in Newark federal court. In addition to the prison term, Judge McNulty also sentenced Underhill to five years of supervised release.

According to court documents, Underhill used a peer-to-peer file sharing program on his computer to download videos and images of child sexual abuse. In October 2016, law enforcement downloaded over three dozen such videos from Underhill’s computer. After executing a search warrant at Underhill’s home in March 2017, agents located nearly 1000 videos and over 12,000 images of child sexual abuse on Underhill’s computers.

Underhill admitted that he was making videos available for others to download, and the court documents stated that he had been distributing child pornography over the internet.

The investigation was led by special agents with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigation’s Newark Division, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Brian Michael.

The government was represented by Senior Litigation Counsel Mark J. McCarren of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Special Prosecutions Division in Newark, while defense counsel was Lisa Mack Esq., Assistant Federal Public Defender.

This case is a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their crimes, particularly those that involve the exploitation and abuse of children. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute those who engage in such heinous activities.
