South Boston Bank Heist Gets Man 78 Months in Prison
Eugene Davis, a 54-year-old Chicago man, was sentenced to 78 months in prison and three years of supervised release by U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin in a federal court in Boston for two bank robberies. On April 28, 2021, Davis pleaded guilty to two counts of bank robbery.
On June 3, 2019, Davis robbed a branch of the East Boston Savings Bank in South Boston by handing a handwritten demand note to the teller claiming there was a bomb in his suitcase and threatening everyone’s lives. The teller provided him with $6,055 in cash, which he placed in his shirt before walking out.
Earlier that same year, on May 22, 2019, Davis committed a similar robbery at a Chase Bank in Chicago. He handed the teller a demand note stating he had a bomb, threatened that they would all die if dye packs were included, and received approximately $3,460 in cash.
The investigation into the bank robberies involved several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI’s Boston and Chicago divisions, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Boston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus prosecuted the case.
The sentencing of Eugene Davis brings an end to a series of brazen bank robberies in Massachusetts and Illinois. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in combating crime.
The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell, John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, and other top law enforcement officials.
