Terry M. Dickinson Convicted of Distributing Child Porn
A federal jury has convicted 55-year-old Terry M. Dickinson of Millport, New York, of distributing, receiving and possessing child pornography, a crime that carries a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, a maximum of 20 years, a $500,000 fine or both.
According to court documents, an undercover agent in Elmira, New York, downloaded child pornography from Dickinson’s computer using a peer-to-peer software program in June and July 2010. The investigation, which was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to protect children from online exploitation and abuse, led to the execution of a search warrant at Dickinson’s residence in August 2010.
During the search, agents seized items of digital media, including computers, thumb drives and memory cards. A forensic analysis of the memory cards revealed images and videos of child pornography. Additionally, a notebook containing handwritten notes detailing Dickinson’s sexual encounters with children was discovered.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. stated, ‘A study has shown that a significant percentage of people convicted of child pornography crimes have in fact been involved in hands on crimes against children.’ Hochul emphasized the importance of the investigation, which may have prevented further harm to children.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to protect children from online exploitation and abuse. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New York State Police, and the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office.
Terry M. Dickinson is scheduled to be sentenced on September 3, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford. The conviction serves as a reminder of the severity of child pornography crimes and the importance of continued efforts to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.
