SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – In a stunning display of justice, 36-year-old Chittenango man Thomas Collins was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for distributing and possessing numerous images and videos of child pornography.
Collins, a convicted sex offender, was found guilty of his crimes after a lengthy investigation by the United States Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the New York State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the New York State Police Troop D Computer Crime Unit. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian LaRochelle prosecuted the case as a part of Project Safe Childhood.
According to court documents, Collins distributed images and videos of child pornography to two undercover law enforcement officers via a social networking application on several occasions in April 2023. On the day of his arrest, May 18, 2023, Collins was found to possess numerous images and videos of child pornography on several of his electronic devices.
United States District Judge David N. Hurd handed down the harsh sentence, requiring Collins to serve a 10-year term of supervised release following his release from prison. During this time, Collins will be required to register as a sex offender, a fate that awaits many who prey on the vulnerable.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of child exploitation and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat this heinous crime. Project Safe Childhood, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice, marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet.
As Collins begins his decade-long prison sentence, victims and their families can take solace in the knowledge that justice has been served. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
