Brett Michael Smith, a 35-year-old Florida man, was sentenced to 121 months in prison for receiving child pornography. The sentence came after an investigation by the FBI and other agencies uncovered approximately 20,000 images and 4,500 videos of child pornography on his devices. The investigation began with a federal search warrant and forensic analysis of Smith’s cell phone and computers, revealing a disturbing collection of sadistic imagery and sexual abuse of multiple children, including infants. The searches began in November 2020 and continued through March 13, 2025. Smith was sentenced by United States District Judge Karoline Mehalchick in Scranton, PA.
The case was part of a larger effort by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse through Project Safe Childhood. This nationwide initiative, launched in May 2006, aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims. The investigation was conducted by the FBI – Philadelphia Division, Allentown RAC, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Minersville Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney Tatum Wilson prosecuted the case, which highlights the importance of cooperation between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in combating child exploitation. The sentence of 121 months reflects the severity of the crime and the need to protect children from those who would seek to harm them.
