Richard Joseph Ahearn, Child Pornography Receipt, Florida 2023

Richard Joseph Ahearn, a 56-year-old Fort Pierce resident, has been sentenced to 75 months in prison for his involvement in receiving and possessing child pornography. This disturbing crime has shaken the community, and it is a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect our children from exploitation.

Ahearn pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 2252(a)(2) and 2252(a)(4)(B) respectively. After serving his sentence, Ahearn will be placed on supervised release for 10 years and will be required to register as a sex offender.

The investigation into Ahearn’s activities began when Yahoo! reported suspected child pornography images to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NMEC). The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office obtained state search warrants for the Flickr account and associated email accounts, which revealed sexually explicit online chats with minors. Further investigation led to the discovery of child pornography on Ahearn’s computer.

Ahearn’s employment as an Information Technology Professional with the St. Lucie County Tax Collector’s Office has raised questions about how he was able to conceal his activities. His position of trust has been compromised, and it is a harsh reminder of the importance of thorough background checks and security protocols.

U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer commended the investigative efforts of ICE-HSI and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel E. Funk prosecuted the case, bringing Ahearn to justice for his heinous crimes.

The sentencing of Richard Ahearn is a significant victory in the fight against child exploitation. It serves as a warning to those who would seek to harm our children and a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies to protecting our communities.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child exploitation and abuse. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
