A Bronx man, Lu Jianwang, also known as ‘Harry Lu’, has been convicted of operating a secret police station in lower Manhattan for the Chinese government. The station, run by the People’s Republic of China’s Ministry of Public Security, targeted Chinese dissidents in the US. Lu, a US citizen, was found guilty of acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government and obstruction of justice. The verdict was returned after a one-week trial in federal court in Brooklyn.
The police station, which was exposed by the FBI, was part of a larger effort by the Chinese government to suppress dissent and monitor the activities of Chinese citizens living abroad. Lu’s co-defendant, Chen Jinping, pleaded guilty in December 2024 to conspiring to act as an agent of the Chinese government. The case highlights the growing concern over Chinese government interference in the US and the need for law enforcement to protect the rights of Chinese citizens living in America.
The conviction of Lu Jianwang sends a strong message to foreign agents operating in the US that their activities will not be tolerated. The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are committed to disrupting and exposing the clandestine operations of adversarial nations. Lu faces up to 30 years in prison when sentenced.
The US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Joseph Nocella, stated that the case demonstrates the office’s commitment to protecting the rights of people seeking freedom from repression and speaking out to bring democracy, reform, and human rights to China. The FBI Assistant Director in Charge, James C. Barnacle, Jr., emphasized the importance of revealing and disrupting the clandestine operations of adversarial nations.
