Springfield Man Arrested for Fentanyl Distribution
A 25-year-old Springfield man has been arrested on charges of fentanyl distribution, according to the US Attorney’s office in Massachusetts. Christian Camacho was taken into custody after being indicted on one count of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl.
Camacho was released on conditions following an initial appearance in federal court in Springfield before US District Court Magistrate Judge Katherine A. Robertson. The indictment alleges that Camacho knowingly possessed 40 grams or more of fentanyl intended for distribution in Hampden County on or about March 30, 2022.
The charge of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl carries a sentence of up to 40 years in prison, four years of supervised release, and a fine of $2 million.
US Attorney Rachael S. Rollins and other law enforcement officials made the announcement today. Assistant US Attorney Todd E. Newhouse is prosecuting the case.
The details contained in the indictment are allegations, and Camacho is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Camacho’s arrest is the latest in a series of crackdowns on fentanyl distribution in the region. The Springfield Police Department, the DEA, and other law enforcement agencies have been working together to combat the opioid crisis.
