In a disturbing trend, Christiano Henrique De Paula, a 27-year-old citizen of Brazil, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.
De Paula, also known as ‘Christiano DePaula,’ ‘Christian DePaula,’ and ‘Christiano Decamargo,’ was convicted in New Jersey in May 2008 for aggravated assault with a weapon. He was subsequently deported to his native Brazil.
However, De Paula illegally returned to the US and pleaded guilty in the Southern District of Texas on August 25, 2008, to illegal entry of a removed alien. He was sentenced to 20 days of imprisonment and deported again in October 2008.
But De Paula’s troubles didn’t end there. On June 27, 2012, he was arrested by Bridgeport Police after being involved in an altercation at a local restaurant. At the time of his arrest, De Paula was using the alias ‘Christiano Decamargo.’
De Paula has been detained since his arrest and on March 6, 2013, he pleaded guilty to one count of illegal reentry of a removed alien. This matter was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations, with the assistance of the Bridgeport Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Hal Chen.
The sentence of 15 months in federal prison is a stark reminder that reentering the US after being deported is a serious crime with severe consequences. De Paula’s actions not only put himself at risk but also put the community in danger.
