Defendant Lands 2.5 Years in Prison for Tax Fraud Conspiracy
Christine Rose Caraway, 34, of Modesto, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for conspiring to submit false claims to the IRS, a move that earned her a hefty price tag and a significant amount of prison time.
Caraway, along with her former spouse Heath Lee Roberson, obtained personal identifying information from over 40 individuals between December 2010 and May 2011. They then used this information to generate false tax returns and submitted them to the IRS, funneling the tax refunds into accounts they controlled.
Caraway was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii, who also ordered her to pay over $60,000 in restitution to the IRS. This comes as no surprise, given the severity of her crimes.
According to court documents, Caraway and Roberson’s scheme was extensive and well-planned. They managed to obtain personal identifying information from a staggering 40 individuals, using it to generate false tax returns and submit them to the IRS.
The IRS – Criminal Investigation led the investigation into Caraway’s crimes, with Assistant United States Attorney Michael G. Tierney prosecuting the case. The outcome was hardly unexpected, given the severity of the crimes committed.
Caraway’s former spouse, Heath Lee Roberson, was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison back in July 2014 for his role in the scheme.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting personal identifying information and the severe consequences of committing tax fraud.
